Understanding Wetland Loss in NZ

ELI commissioned the National Wetland Trust to undertake a study exploring the key reasons for ongoing wetland loss in NZ. The study identified the weak links in the public policy chain that are allowing wetland drainage to continue. Even taking into account the national improvements some of these weak policy links, the broken link in the chain remains that councils are simply not effectively monitoring wetland compliance, and enforcing it. As a result the system is failing.
