ELI has lodged a submission on the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Hazardous Substances Asssessments) Amendment Bill.

Our submission focuses on several key aspects of the bill.

  • Enhanced transparency

  • International regulators

  • Temporary restriction of use

  • General comment on feedback.

New Zealand lags behind other OECD nations in its regulation of hazardous substances. Numerous hazardous substances that have been banned overseas continue to be used daily in New Zealand. This is due to a combination of factors, including perceived economic benefits, the EPA not taking into account the full economic and environmental costs of hazardous substances, a paucity of information on environmental harms, and the slow and expensive nature of the current assessment/reassessment process. We therefore support the aim and purpose of the Bill. Any improvements to the hazardous substances regulatory regime are to be welcomed.
